"No way," thought Jim when his friends suggested he sign up on an adult dating site. "I'm not that desperate. I can handle the dating scene on my own."
Jim wasn't the kind of guy to believe in that "new-fangled" stuff. Despite his stoic demeanor he had a tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve. He had done the "love dance" more than once, and he was reluctant to have his heart stomped all over again.
But, he had to admit to himself, there was some appeal to going the adult dating site route. He figured chances were slim that he'd ever meet someone on an adult dating site that would appeal to him -- not to mention, it was unlikely, or so he thought, anyone else on an adult dating site would find HIM appealing.
So on the sly, he signed up for several using a different pseudonym on each to "protect" his identity. Jim spent hours browsing the sites, putting in all sorts of criteria and key words he thought might generate "interesting" results.
"Absolutely amazing," he thought, when he read some of the profiles that popped up on his screen. "No wonder this person is still available," he muttered to himself when he read yet another badly-badly written profile.
"This one can't be for real," he thought, when he stumbled across another's profile that had to have been written by a Madison Avenue pitchman, complete with a photograph that was clearly knock-out material.
So, on a whim to "test his theory" he sent out invitations to two dozen women across the six sites he subscribed to and sat back to wait and see what the results may be.
Two-thirds of the women never responded. Six more responded saying "thanks but no thanks" That left just two unaccounted for. It took another two weeks, but finally both replied to his initial inquiry. One woman wrote and asked Jim if he was interested in a "open relationship" as she was looking for someone who would "let her have her cake and eat it, too." Jim politely declined.
The final "candidate" asked Jim if he would mind filling out a questionnaire. She was doing a research project on on-line dating and hoped he would be so kind as to respond.
Intrigued, Jim agreed, and spent a good two hours completing the survey. By return email he got an automated message.
