'Have you ever thought about speed dating?' asked my friend Cath one day. We were both single and had been for a very long time, and went out together every weekend looking for a bit of excitement, but were beginning to think that people saw us together so much that they maybe got the wrong idea and thought that we were an item.
'I've been reading allabout speed dating', she continued, 'and I think that we should give it a go, it sounds like great fun and if we find a bit of alright then that's great, if not, we only have to put up with them for a few minutes each, can't be bad really can it?' I spluttered a little into my lager, but could not find any reasonable argument against it, so the following Friday, we headed off, all glammed up and readyfor action,to a nearby pub where there was going to be a speed dating session upstairs. We had planned to go early, sit in the bar for a drink and keep an eye on the blokes which were going upstairs to see if any of them took our fancy, and do a bit of a runner if they all looked like dirty old men or computer geeks. In fact, we were very pleasantly surprised.
'I wouldn't mind a bit of slap and tickle with that one', mused Cath, as a very trendy young guy came in through the door, even though he was a good 15 years younger than her. I tried to look shocked but had to agree, it had been long time since either of us had any sex, and we were always laughing that we'd forgetwhat it's likeand shrivel up and die.
We decided to take the plunge and went upstairs to the speed dating room. It was surprisingly full with people of all ages, some of them looked very confident (a little too confident maybe) and some, like us, looked scared to death. Maybe we should have had a few more drinks downstairs first. A very nice lady called Clare called everyone together and explained what was going to happen. Us ladies all sat in the same place and the guys moved along the line every few minutes, so that we all had the chance to speak to each other. I could hardly conceal my boredom with some of the guys, and could only just hold in a yawn a couple of times, but all in all it was good fun. Neither of us found Mr Right, but agreed to go again the following month.
